Multiple Rooms — One Outdoor Unit

A multi-split system connects two to eight individual indoor units to a single outdoor condenser. Each indoor unit cools and heats its own room independently — so one person can have their bedroom at 20°C while another has their home office at 23°C, all from the same system. This makes multi-split the most practical whole-home cooling solution for properties where multiple separate outdoor units would be impractical or visually unacceptable.

Each indoor unit is connected to the outdoor unit by its own set of refrigerant pipes, allowing the system to operate selectively — running only the rooms that need cooling at any given time. You can mix indoor unit types on the same outdoor unit: a wall-mounted unit in a bedroom, a cassette in a living room and a floor-standing unit in a conservatory, for example. We design the pipe layout and select the outdoor unit capacity to match the combined cooling load of all the indoor units.

  • 2–8 indoor units from one outdoor unit

Ideal for Limited Outdoor Space

Multi-split is the ideal solution where planning restrictions, lease terms or the property layout limit the number of outdoor units permitted. One compact outdoor unit serves the whole property.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rooms can a multi-split system cover?

Most multi-split systems accommodate between two and eight indoor units from a single outdoor unit, depending on the manufacturer and model. The outdoor unit capacity must be matched to the combined cooling load of all the indoor units — we calculate this as part of the survey.

Can all the indoor units run at the same time?

Yes. Multi-split systems are designed so all connected indoor units can operate simultaneously. The outdoor unit is sized to handle the combined load. In practice, not all rooms will need cooling at the same time, which improves efficiency.

Is a multi-split system more expensive than separate split systems?

The equipment cost is usually higher for a multi-split system than for the equivalent number of single split systems. However, the installation cost is often lower because only one outdoor unit is being installed, and the overall appearance and planning impact is reduced.

Can I add more indoor units to a multi-split system in future?

In some cases, yes — if the outdoor unit has spare capacity and connection ports. We'll advise during the design stage whether a system can be expanded later and what would be required to do so.
